Artist

Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (Norwegian, 1863–1944) was a pioneering figure in modern art, best known for his iconic and emotionally charged painting The Scream. Born in Løten, Norway, and raised amid personal tragedy, Munch developed a deeply introspective style that explored the complexities of love, death, anxiety, and human vulnerability. Drawing from Symbolism and steeped in psychological intensity, his work bridged 19th-century Romanticism and the emerging currents of Expressionism, profoundly influencing generations of artists across Europe and beyond.

Working primarily in painting, printmaking, and drawing, Munch employed bold color, dynamic lines, and unsettling compositions to give form to the invisible forces of the psyche. His recurring themes and motifs - such as the melancholic figure, the kiss, or the specter of illness - echoed his belief that art should reflect the inner life. Munch's visual language, raw and lyrical, remains one of the most enduring expressions of psychological introspection in Western art.
