Romaine Brooks

Romaine Brooks (1874–1970) was an American painter known for her muted palette, psychological portraits, and open rejection of conventional femininity. Born in Rome to American parents, she endured a troubled childhood and later inherited a fortune that allowed her to pursue art independently. She studied briefly in Paris and developed a distinctive style focused on grayscale tones and introspective sitters.

Living in Paris and Capri, Brooks became part of a progressive, often queer, expatriate circle. Her portraits featured artists, aristocrats, and writers, including her longtime partner Natalie Barney. Her self-portraits are especially noted for their restrained intensity and refusal of decorative excess.

Brooks painted most actively between 1910 and 1925, later turning to drawing and writing. Though she withdrew from the public eye, her work has since been recognized for its subtle defiance and lasting influence on representations of identity and gender in modern art.
