George Wesley Bellows

George Bellows (American, 1882–1925) was one of the most dynamic and influential American painters of the early 20th century, best known for his raw, kinetic depictions of urban life and sport. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Bellows moved to New York City in 1904, where he studied at the New York School of Art under Robert Henri, the leading figure of what would become known as the Ashcan School.

Bellows quickly distinguished himself through his visceral scenes of boxing matches, particularly in works like "Stag at Sharkey's" (1909), which stunned audiences with its immediacy, energy, and physicality. His thick, vigorous brushwork and bold compositions captured the sweat, struggle, and spectacle of the ring while also offering a broader commentary on class, power, and masculinity in modern America.

Though best known for his urban subjects, Bellows' later work expanded to include landscapes, war-themed prints, and domestic scenes. He remained deeply committed to social engagement throughout his career, whether addressing the brutality of war or the texture of working-class life. Bellows died unexpectedly at age 42, but in just over a decade, he produced an extraordinary body of work that blended realism with expressive power.
